In short

Claude can import ChatGPT's memory with a copy-and-paste prompt, but what travels is a summary, not your data. We explain how it works, what gets lost and why it pays to keep your context in a place of your own that all your assistants can read.

In short

Yes, you can move from ChatGPT to Claude without starting from zero. Claude has a memory importer: you ask ChatGPT to list everything it remembers about you, copy the result and paste it into Claude. It works, but what travels is a summary, not your data. If you change assistants often, it pays to keep your context in a place of your own that all of them can read.

What happens to your memory when you change assistants?

Each assistant keeps its own memory. What ChatGPT knows about you (how you like it to respond, your projects, your tools) lives inside ChatGPT, and Claude can't see it. New account, new explanation.

At Traiker we think about this too: almost nobody wants to be married to one assistant. It's normal to want to use whichever works best at any given moment without losing what you already have.

How do you import ChatGPT's memory into Claude?

Anthropic explains it in its help centre. In short:

  1. In Claude, go to Settings > Memory and click “Start import”.
  2. Copy the prompt it offers and paste it into a new ChatGPT chat. It asks ChatGPT to list every memory it has about you, without summarising or omitting anything, in a single block of text.
  3. Copy the response, paste it into Claude and click “Add to memory”.

According to that same page, the import is available on the Free, Pro, Max and Team plans, on the web and in Claude Desktop. It reached the free plan in March 2026.

Before pasting, read the block and remove anything you don't want to take with you; Anthropic itself suggests excluding sensitive information.

What gets left behind?

More than it seems. You import what ChatGPT says about you, not an exact copy. Anthropic warns that Claude's memory focuses on work topics, so it may not keep personal details, and that the import is experimental and doesn't always come in properly.

Your conversations don't travel either. That's what ChatGPT's export is for: under Settings > Data controls > Export, you receive a ZIP with your history. OpenAI says it can take up to 7 days to arrive and the link expires after 24 hours. In Business and Enterprise workspaces there is no self-service export: it depends on the administrator.

What if you want to try Grok tomorrow or go back to ChatGPT?

Every move is another copy and paste, and every copy comes out a little different. In a few months you have three memories that don't match and none of them is fully yours.

The useful question isn't how to move the memory, but where it should live. We cover this in who owns your AI agent's memory: if it lives in someone else's tool, their terms rule.

How do we approach it at Traiker?

We flip it around: your data and context live in a single place that is yours, and each assistant queries it when needed through MCP; we're opening access gradually in the beta. ChatGPT, Claude or Grok read the same source, so changing assistants stops being a move.

  • Your data is yours: we don't train models on it or process it. Each person or company has their own encrypted database.
  • It is never used for anything else.
  • You export or delete everything whenever you want.
  • You don't have to know about databases: you start from a template and your AI does the rest.

Before connecting anything, review what to demand before giving your data to an AI without losing control.

Frequently asked questions

Is my ChatGPT memory deleted when I import it into Claude?

No. Copying the summary doesn't touch anything in ChatGPT; you can keep using it as before.

Can I move my Claude memory to another assistant?

Yes. You can ask Claude to write out its memories about you as they are and save them to a file to paste wherever you want.

Are my conversations transferred too?

Not with the importer. Conversations are exported separately, from ChatGPT's settings, in a ZIP file.

If you want to stop moving your memory from one assistant to another, sign up for the Traiker beta.
